Born and raised in Sanford, Florida, Andy Marlette has been cartooning
since childhood and began formally studying the art form while living
with uncle and Pulitzer Prize winning editorial cartoonist, Doug
Marlette, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 2001.
In 2003 Marlette enrolled at the University of Florida, majoring
in Classical Studies, and there he served three years as the Art
Director and editorial cartoonist for the Independent Florida Alligator,
which is the largest independent college newspaper in the country.
During his time at the Alligator, Marlette’s cartoons became
a significant element of the newspaper and a popular daily read
of over 50,000 students on the UF campus, as well as readers throughout
the Gainesville community. It is not uncommon in Gainesville to
find a dorm-room wall or an apartment refrigerator with a Marlette
editorial cartoon decorating it.
Marlette has been awarded several times for his work at the college
paper, being named a national finalist in the Society of Professional
Journalists’ 2004 Mark of Excellence Awards as well as one
of three national finalists in the Scripps/Howard Foundation’s
2004 Charles M. Schulz Award for Best College Cartoonist.
In 2004 while enrolled at UF, Marlette illustrated two published
children’s books co-authored by Orlando Sentinel sports columnist,
Mike Bianchi and nationally syndicated columnist Marisol Novak,
both of whom were also University of Florida Alumni.
Since 2004 Marlette has been cartooning weekly for the Williston
Pioneer-Sun News based out of Williston, Florida. His cartoons have
been well received within the community and he was even awarded
the 2004 Florida Press Association Award for Best Original Weekly
Cartoon.
A recent graduate of the University of Florida, Marlette currently
resides in Gainesville, FL.
